Another Football Season: Roll Tide, War Eagle, and Other Such Nonsense

go-sports

Well, it’s that time again.

Time to sit and watch hours upon hours of football.  Grab the chips and salsa.  Grab the cooler.  Grab the wings.

And sadly, in these days, time to grab your smartphone, click on your social media app, and give everyone a play by play of how your team is doing.  If things are going your way, you rub it in everyone’s newsfeed.  If your team is doing terrible, you’re mysteriously silent.  If your team catches up, it’s the greatest comeback in the history of anything.

Football + Social media tends to make harmless, normal, loving people into obnoxious jerks.

We all seem to think our team is the best.  And the other team is the worst.

We all become experts on all things football.

And we all become like Weird Al in his “Sports Song” (by the way, I don’t condone the use of the word “sucks” but the rest of the video is hilarious).  Watch the video below, and then continue reading:

Each year, I make a formal proclamation at the beginning of the football season on my Facebook page.

See, I am what’s known as an Alabama fan.  And I’m a recovering fan-a-holic.

The past few years, I’ve made this statement on my page:

“Football season is here. I love watching college and the pros. As I have done for the past few years I am vowing not to make any Crimson Tide comments throughout the year. While many college football comments are harmless – often times people get carried away on social media and end up insulting others with their comments. So until the last snap of the year – Roll Tide! Go SEC!!”

We need to be careful how we come across in our fanaticism.  I love being an Alabama fan.  I’m a Yankees fan.  I’m a Titans fan.  I love my “sports teams” and think they’re the greatest.  But we just need to remember how we come across as we’re posting our comments.
Love your team, but love others.

Winter “Wonder” Land – Day FIVE!!!!! (The one where we are attacked by giant icicles…)

Today, I was successfully able to get the ice off of (most of) Kristen’s car.

In other news – check out this GIANT ICICLE that I pulled off of our front porch!

I felt like I was wielding the sword of William Wallace!!

In fact, this thing was so large, it made Josie look like a miniature version of herself:

Believe it or not – this thing was 31 inches long!!

The Great Ice Storm of 2015: Day 3

Well, here we are, day 3 of the great ice storm of 2015.  Still stuck inside.

I got out of the house today to walk down to the end of our road, just to see what the cross street looked like.  First of all, here’s our driveway (it IS under there, I promise..):

1

If you look right out of our driveway, you see this:

3

If you look left out of our driveway, you see this:

2

When you get to Old Smyrna Road, this is what you see when you turn right:

4

And this is what you see when you turn left (Notice, the 4-wheel drive Jeep that spun off the road and sat overnight…):

Needless to say – unless there is a major emergency, we will not be getting out tonight, or more than likely tomorrow, since the HIGH in the morning is supposed to be a Canadian-like NEGATIVE 8 degrees!!  That’s right, -8 in Nashville.

I did stop a brave motorist driving down our road.  He did assure me that if I could get to the main roads, they are clear, however he also said that if he had it to do over again, he would not have driven out of our subdivision.  The only ways in and out of our subdivision is on a crooked and hilly road.

Be safe out there.

The Great Ice Age of 2015

I’m sitting in my wife’s car, in front of our house. I decided to come out today to start it and melt the ice off. I’ve been sitting here with the defroster on for 10 minutes now and here is my windshield:

The yard looks like it has snow, but nope. It’s ice as well. Not sure how I will gracefully go down the hill back to the front door:

I’ve seen a few cars drive down the road today. Not sure what they’re thinking. It’s solid ice as well:

School is out for the rest of the week. Kristen was commenting today that it’s so sad that people can’t just enjoy being at home – that it seems like people have an itch to have to get out of the house.

Stay home. Stay warm. Be safe. Enjoy some time off, whether you wanted it or not.

Tonight – I’d like to share with you a link to an article I read this past week that have me thinking…a lot… and some other random thoughts.

1.  Cyber Stupidity?  Here is an amazingly well written article about some social media faux pas that some individuals made, and how the cyber community responded.  We need to always remember what we post publicly will always be critiqued.  But, we must also remember, that there is no reason to belittle people for a momentary lapse in judgement.

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/02/15/magazine/how-one-stupid-tweet-ruined-justine-saccos-life.html

2.  Today, our realtor came by with a professional photographer to snap shots of our home before we put it up for sale.  Its making me more and more anxious to begin my new ministry in Florida!  Trust me, its worth it to pay the ext a $$$ to get a professional photographer to snap shots of your house.  They make your home look great!!

3.  So how do you celebrate Valentine’s Day?  Do go all out and do something special for your loved ones?  Do you avoid going out to eat like the plague?  Do you think its just a cheesy consumer driven holiday by Hallmark?

4.  App of the week – Trivia Crack.  If you’re not playing, you’re missing out!

My Favorite Websites: mental_floss

mental-floss-logo

Most of us have websites that we frequently visit.  For many, it has something to do with our career or hobbies.

One of my favorite websites doesn’t really deal with my career, but it somewhat deals with a hobby of mine – pop culture.

The website http://www.mentalfloss.com is one that I visit almost daily.  It is filled with all sorts of wonderful but often useless information.  Take for example one of today’s trending posts about parody singer Weird Al Yankovic:

http://mentalfloss.com/article/57901/20-weird-and-not-so-weird-facts-about-weird-al-yankovic-and-his-songs

Every few days or so, they also release a new video that, for those of us who love strange and odd facts, is just wonderful.  Their second episode was a smash hit – and it was about Mr. Rogers:

While there are many different hosts, my favorite is the one featured in this video – John Green – who also wrote the book “The Fault in Our Stars.”  There are also about 225 episodes to date, so there are plenty of awesome, fact discovering lessons to learn!

Subscribe to their Youtube channel, and be amazed!

The Hilarious Curse of Having an Overly Complicated Last Name

Hello-My-Name-Is-Hard-to-Pronounce-300x194

I grew up in a small town.  My father was a teacher and a principal at a small Christian school, and was also a preacher in town.  While he was not what most would call “famous” he was well known.  More importantly people knew how to pronounce our last name…if they knew us.  If they didn’t, we knew it was going to be a wild ride.

For people who know us, and have known us – they don’t understand how our name could be mispronounced.

Widick.  It is pronounced with a long “I” sound – like “Why.”

But for some reason, people like to pronounce it differently.  And when I say differently – I mean, about 900 different ways.

Now listen, I can understand mispronouncing it with a short “I” sound, effectively making it sound like “Widdick.”  I get that.

However, I don’t understand how people absolutely butcher our last name.

Below are just a few of the ways our name has been mispronounced or misspelled:

Widwick

Werdrick

Widlick

Wiredick

Wicklick

Widmick

Wyldick

And my personal favorite:  Widdawick

How do random “Ls” and “Rs” end up our name?  I suppose I’ll never figure it out.

When I went to college, my brother and sister had gone to the same school before me.  They allowed, apparently, all the college professors to mispronounce our name.  You can imagine my surprise when I started class the first day, and the teacher was going over the class list – and said “Lane Widdick.”

I corrected him, and said “Here, but sir, its pronounced Widick, with a long “I” sound.”

He looked at me and said “No, I don’t think so, I think its pronounced Widdick.”

Going to restaurants is always fun.  Its to the point now where I just give them my first name.  Its just easier than hearing people try to say “Widd…Why…Widrick…party of 3.”

Because of my complicated last name, I am very sensitive to people who have unusual or complicated names.  My first job out of college was teaching/campus ministry/coaching at a Christian school in Houston, Texas.

My first period class one year had 12 people, and 8 different nationalities represented.

We had players on our basketball teams with last names that were 15 letters long with 7 syllables.  I always felt so bad when the announcers would butcher their names.

I’m proud of my last name, and I know that wherever I go, its almost a badge of honor.

Like today – we had our carpets cleaned in our home to prep it so we can sell it in the next few weeks.  Over the phone the gentleman tried very hard to write our last name down.  When he asked me for my first name, I said “Lane, L-a-n-e” and when he asked or my last name I did what I always do.  I said – my last name is spelled “W-I-D-I-C-K.” And then I pronounce it – “Widick.”

Now, I do this because when I just say it first, it tends to freak them out.  They usually stammer and ramble “Uh…um…okay…that’s W…”

So I just spell it.

He repeated back to me “Okay, that is W – E…”

Me – “No, no… ‘I.’”

Him – “Oh, sorry, so its ‘W-I-E.’”

Me – “No, no…i’m sorry, its ‘W – I – D – I – C -K.’”

Him – “My apologies sir ‘W – I – E – D – was it another W…?”

Me – “Yes…that’s fine.”

This morning when the technician came in, he was very professional, and had my paperwork to sign before he began.  On the paperwork – it said “Lane Widlick,” which wasn’t even one of the options the man a few days before gave me.

The technician asked me “Are you related to a Matthew Widlick?  He’s another one of our customers.”

I said “No sir, that’s not my last name.” to which he responded “Oh, let me correct that for you.”

I just said, “Don’t worry about it.”

To all of you out there with complicated or unusual last names, my heart goes out to you.  Here’s to another day of deciding “Do I correct them, or just let them think they’re right?”

Praise Songs or Hymns?

SingingChurch-300x209

This is a re-post from December of 2009.  Its also a classic joke that I just love.  I hope you enjoy this tonight:

Here’s a funny little story about Hymns and Praise Songs.  The author is unknown .

An old farmer went to the city one weekend and attended the big city church. He came home and his wife asked him how it was.

“Well,” said the farmer. “It was good. They did something different, however. They sang praise choruses instead of hymns.”

“Praise choruses?” asked the wife. “What are those?”

“Oh, they’re okay. They’re sort of like hymns, only different,” said the farmer.

“Well, what’s the difference?” asked the wife.

The farmer said, “Well it’s like this … If I were to say to you, ‘Martha, the cows are in the corn,’ well that would be a hymn. If, on the other hand, I were to say to you,

‘Martha, Martha, Martha, Oh, Martha, MARTHA, MARTHA,
the cows, the big cows, the brown cows, the black cows, the white cows, the black and white cows,
the COWS, COWS, COWS are in the corn, are in the corn, are in the corn,
in the CORN, CORN, CORN, COOOOORRRRRNNNNN,’

Then, if I were to repeat the whole thing two or three times, well that would be a praise chorus.”

As luck would have it, the exact same Sunday a young, new Christian from the city church attended the small town church. He came home and his wife asked him how it was.

“Well,” said the young man, “It was good. They did something different, however. They sang hymns instead of praise songs.”

“Hymns?” asked the wife. “What are those?”

“They’re okay. They’re sort of like praise songs, only different,” said the young man.

“Well, what’s the difference?” asked the wife.

The young man said, “Well it’s like this … If I were to say to you, ‘Martha, the cows are in the corn,’ well that would be a praise song. If on the other hand, I were to say to you,

Oh Martha, dear Martha, hear thou my cry
Inclinest thine ear to the words of my mouth.
Turn thou thy whole wondrous ear by and by
To the righteous, glorious truth.

For the way of the animals who can explain
There in their heads is no shadow of sense,
Hearkenest they in God’s sun or his rain
Unless from the mild, tempting corn they are fenced.

Yea those cows in glad bovine, rebellious delight,
Have broke free their shackles, their warm pens eschewed.
Then goaded by minions of darkness and night
They all my mild Chilliwack sweet corn chewed.

So look to that bright shining day by and by,
Where all foul corruptions of earth are reborn
Where no vicious animal makes my soul cry
And I no longer see those foul cows in the corn,

Then, if I were to do only verses one, three and four, and change keys on the last verse, well that would be a hymn.”

1.  A weatherman in Phoenix wins the internet with this video of how he handled a technical snafu on his weather report.

2.  Last night, at around 11:45, we had an interesting situation crop up at our home.  I usually stay up later, and I was sitting in my chair catching up on some Top Gear episodes.  I hear some humming, and Josie comes bounding down the stairs.  She looks over at me and says “Hi Daddy!”  She was dressed, ready for school, and had her hair brush so Kristen could fix her hair.  I just stared at her – and said “What are you doing?  Its the middle of the night?”  She thought it was morning and time to eat breakfast.  Sigh…

3.  My prediction for the Super Bowl is still for the Seahawks to win.  I’m going to guess 21-10, Seahawks.

4.  Last winter, I won a teamaker.  I had always wanted to enjoy hot beverages, I just never could find one that I liked.  I don’t like coffee.  I never cared for hot tea.  Hot chocolate is always great, but isn’t the best for you!  I won a Breville teamaker, pictured below.  I had no idea that different teas were to be brewed at different temperatures and for different lengths.  Tonight – I’m enjoying a cup of David’s Tea – the Superberry flavor (discontinued).  I highly recommend their Honey Bee flavor.
