Tonight, I’m Thankful. Are You?

Two Sundays from now, Lord willing, I’ll be starting my new ministry in Tampa, Florida at the Northwest Tampa Church of Christ.

As a preacher, I don’t often have opportunities to visit other churches.  I’ve been blessed over the past few weeks to do so.  This weekend, we drove down to Huntsville and visited with friends and family.  We celebrated Valentine’s day at my wife’s sister’s home, and got to celebrate with her family.  I’m thankful for loving in-laws that care deeply about us.

I’m thankful that we got to see Kristen’s “Pa” – her grandfather, who was a gospel preacher for many years.  Old age has pushed him out of that career, but I have such an awe and respect for him and his years of service.  He never made fortunes.  He served humbly.

I’m thankful this weekend that I was able to visit my oldest and dearest friend, Jason.  He is doing such a marvelous work at the Mayfair Church of Christ in Huntsville, AL.  God has blessed him with such a talent.  I was blessed tonight to be able to speak to this fine church.

I’m thankful that my family got to spend an entire day with his family.  How sweet it was to watch our children play together.  Childhood friends watching their children play together is a great moment to witness.

I’m thankful for a God who loves me, forgives me, blesses me, and watches over me.

I’m thankful the most awesome wife in the entire world.

I’m blessed, and I’m thankful.  Are you?

Thursday Potpourri

Tonight – I’d like to share with you a link to an article I read this past week that have me thinking…a lot… and some other random thoughts.

1.  Cyber Stupidity?  Here is an amazingly well written article about some social media faux pas that some individuals made, and how the cyber community responded.  We need to always remember what we post publicly will always be critiqued.  But, we must also remember, that there is no reason to belittle people for a momentary lapse in judgement.

2.  Today, our realtor came by with a professional photographer to snap shots of our home before we put it up for sale.  Its making me more and more anxious to begin my new ministry in Florida!  Trust me, its worth it to pay the ext a $$$ to get a professional photographer to snap shots of your house.  They make your home look great!!

3.  So how do you celebrate Valentine’s Day?  Do go all out and do something special for your loved ones?  Do you avoid going out to eat like the plague?  Do you think its just a cheesy consumer driven holiday by Hallmark?

4.  App of the week – Trivia Crack.  If you’re not playing, you’re missing out!

To All Who Have Been Bullied (The One Where I Talk About How to Deal With Bullies)

nobullies

I grew up being picked on.

The first bully I ran into was in Kindergarten.  The very first day of school I ever had, he stepped on my hand while I was playing with blocks.  He continued to bully me all through elementary school and junior high.

As I got older, I got fat.  And then, I got acne…bad.  And then, I got glasses.  In fact, in sixth grade, I looked like a kid from “The Far Side” comic strip.  I was mocked and made fun of, daily.

I tried out for the basketball team in 7th grade, and didn’t make it.  I got made fun of.

I was still fat.  I was still covered in acne.  I had greasy hair.  Fortunately, I had gotten contacts.  That helped a bit.

Since I wasn’t the most athletic of folks, I ventured into the fine arts.  I was in the chorus and was in all the drama productions.  That ended up being a blessing.  I found an outlet where I could pour myself into, and found friends who cared about the same thing.

To be honest with you – from about 3rd grade till 9th grade, I was miserable.  I went to a private school, but only was able to go because my father worked there.  We didn’t have money like a lot of others did in my class, so I never had “designer” clothes, or the latest and greatest gadget.

The sad thing is – bullying is one of those things that never stops.  Even now, as a 37 year old, I get made fun of.  My weight, my bald head, they draw a lot of critiques.  Granted, the bullying is different these days, but it still is a shame that adults make fun of other adults.

I guess this hit a nerve with me the other day.  My sweet little girl honestly has one of the kindest, gentlest, sweetest spirits of any little girl I’ve ever known.  There are two young girls in her class that make fun of her.  They won’t play with her.  Its sad that even in the first grade, there’s already “popular” kids.  I hate that word – “popular.”

She has come home several times, saying these two girls made fun of her on the playground, at lunch, etc.  Of course, my wife and I try to tell her – “Just don’t pay any attention to them…”  But, I know better.  Its hard.  Its hard when you long to be accepted, and you’re not.  Its hard when you just want to be nice to everyone, but they don’t want to be nice back.

The thing that scares me is that this is only the beginning.  She is only 6.  If she’s only 6 and she’s already being put in this awkward position, I know we’re going to be holding her many times over the next 20 years, listening to her cry about how mean someone has been to her.

Some people say “that’s just how they are…”, or “their heart is in the right place…” but I’m don’t buy it.  A bully is a bully.  Whether its physically bullying someone, or verbally bullying someone, or just an attitude of overconfidence – its not fun to be around those people.  How a bully becomes the most popular person in their circle of friends is beyond me.

The bible tells me that I’m supposed to love my enemies.  Some of the hardest people in the world to love are bullies – the ones who hurt us.   I often don’t want to forgive them, much less love them.

But Matthew 5:38-41 (NLT) says “You have heard the law that says the punishment must match the injury: ‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I say, do not resist an evil person! If someone slaps you on the right cheek, offer the other cheek also. If you are sued in court and your shirt is taken from you, give your coat, too. If a soldier demands that you carry his gear for a mile, carry it two miles.”

And when I feel like getting revenge, I need to remember this, from Romans 12:19-20 (NLT) “Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God. For the Scriptures say, ‘I will take revenge; I will pay them back,‘ says the Lord.  Instead, ‘If your enemies are hungry, feed them. If they are thirsty, give them something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals of shame on their heads.”

Its one of those lessons that’s a lot easier to say than do.

Remember, you will always have bullies in your life.  Oftentimes, the bullies in your life don’t even realize they are bullies.  Continue living for God.  Continue to remember the golden rule – to treat others like you want to be treated.  If someone is mean to you, treat them with kindness.  And above all else, remember that according to Matthew 7:2, Jesus says “For you will be treated as you treat others. The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged.”

My Favorite Websites: mental_floss

Most of us have websites that we frequently visit.  For many, it has something to do with our career or hobbies.

One of my favorite websites doesn’t really deal with my career, but it somewhat deals with a hobby of mine – pop culture.

The website http://www.mentalfloss.com is one that I visit almost daily.  It is filled with all sorts of wonderful but often useless information.  Take for example one of today’s trending posts about parody singer Weird Al Yankovic:

http://mentalfloss.com/article/57901/20-weird-and-not-so-weird-facts-about-weird-al-yankovic-and-his-songs

Every few days or so, they also release a new video that, for those of us who love strange and odd facts, is just wonderful.  Their second episode was a smash hit – and it was about Mr. Rogers:

While there are many different hosts, my favorite is the one featured in this video – John Green – who also wrote the book “The Fault in Our Stars.”  There are also about 225 episodes to date, so there are plenty of awesome, fact discovering lessons to learn!

Subscribe to their Youtube channel, and be amazed!

2015: The Year of Praise update

WILL BLOOM

Praising God Today for…

  1. My new ministry:  I will join the Northwest Tampa Church of Christ as their preaching minister on March 1.  You can learn more about the church at http://www.tampachurch.org

  2. Stuff:  You know, God has blessed us all.  We have stuff.  I have clothes, a bed, a home, a car, and so much more.  As we prepare to sell our home, we’ve been able to bless others with so many things that we no longer use, need, or want.  Stuff is great, but let’s make sure we don’t get too attached!
  3. Friends:  God has blessed me with so many great relationships.  Today, I was reminded at our monthly preacher’s lunch that I have some great friends, who love me, care for me, and are genuinely concerned about our future in Tampa.

Remember – 2015 is the “Year of Praise” and we need to remember to praise God every day for the things He has done for us.

Peter’s Really Awesome 3 Point Sermon

This was a picture of me reading the Sermon Peter delivered on the temple steps in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost. This was taken while visiting Israel in the summer of 2014.

This was a picture of me reading the sermon that Peter delivered on the temple steps in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost. This was taken while visiting Israel in the summer of 2014.  The steps that are worn are the original temple steps – the ones off to the left have been restored.  It was here where Peter preached the powerful sermon found in Acts 2.

The day had finally come.  Jesus had promised this day to this disciples before he was even crucified, although i’m not sure they really understood that the Comforter was going to be the Holy Spirit.  I’m confident they did not know what the Spirit was going to do for them.

They had watched Jesus ascend into the sky.  The angel had told them “Why are you staring into the sky?  He’ll be back.”  They had already lost Jesus once, but this time it was different.  They didn’t run off.  They didn’t go back to their original jobs.  This time, they knew they had to continue the work Jesus started.

They went back to Jerusalem.  They prayed, along with the women, and Mary, and the brothers of Jesus.  To fulfill Scripture, Peter spoke up and said “We need to replace Judas.”  They chose Matthias after casting lots.

Pentecost came.  There was a gathering of Jesus followers in Jerusalem.  They had been together since Jesus ascended to Heaven.  The disciples were hanging out, and suddenly, a violent wind came from heaven, and filled the house where they were sitting.  Something that looked like tongues of fire came to rest on each of them.  This was the Spirit of God coming to dwell in them.

They spoke in other languages – because in Jerusalem there were staying God fearing Jews from every nation under heaven.  And each of them heard the wonders of God proclaimed in their own language.

Peter gave a lesson that day.  He started off by saying “No, we’re not drunk.”  What a great introduction to a sermon!  He then reminds them of what the prophet Joel had said years before – that the Holy Spirit would come and live among them.  And that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord would be saved.

He then proceeded to remind them about Jesus.  Jesus, of Nazareth, proven to be from God based upon all the miracles and wonders he performed – was here on this earth.  He then reminded them that Jesus was handed over to man, and put to death on the cross.  The good news was that God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because death could not hold on to him.

What they had followed, people like the patriarch David, died, and was buried, and still remained buried.  But Jesus – he no longer was dead.  He arose, and now has passed into Heaven, and sent the Spirit to live and dwell among us.

I love his closing lines.  He says “Make sure you know this – God made Jesus, whom you crucified, Lord of all, and the Messiah.”

The people were moved by this thought.  It cut right to the heart.  I love their response.  They didn’t try to cover it up.  They didn’t try to say they didn’t do it.  They didn’t blame it on the Romans.  They said “What shall we do?”

The way Peter responded to them is the same way he would respond to us today.  Repent.  Be baptized.  Live with the gift of the Spirit.

That day, about 3000 were added to the Jesus movement.  The Church had begun.  And it still stands today.

Tomorrow, believers around the world will gather together.  We’ll sing songs, we’ll pray, we’ll partake of Communion.  But the simple message of salvation still stands true today.  It hasn’t changed since Peter spoke the words thousands of years ago.

Repent.  Be baptized.  Let the Spirit live in you.

Preachers – there is no reason to make the message complicated.  Peter’s lesson was not overdone.  It was not hard to understand.  It was not agenda driven.  It was simply this:  Repent. Be baptized.  Let the Spirit live in you.

The bible does say with other words he pleaded with them.  He reminds them also to “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.”  So I guess the 3 point lesson could be this:

  1. Repent
  2. Be baptized
  3. Let the Spirit live in you and guide you instead of the world.

That will preach my friends.  Change your ways, be baptized, let the Sprit guide you instead of the world.
